Mary Lou Ederer Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Mary Lou Ederer is a retired principal of the Swan Valley School District in Saginaw.

Supported by nearly 40 years of practiced experience in education and academic administration, Ms. Ederer is a retired principal of the Swan Valley School District in Saginaw. Commencing her tenure in 1971, she departed from the position in 1999. At the inception of her career in 1960, she served as a teacher at Shields Elementary School for seven years before transferring to the Swan Valley School District as a reading teacher, consultant and Title I coordinator for the following four years. While serving as principal of the school district, Ms. Ederer was also a preschool director from 1983 to 1999.

Civically involved as well, Ms. Ederer has been a reading coordinator of the Read Association After School Program since 1973 and a member of the Covenant Gift Shop since 2003. Additionally, she has been the president of the Saginaw Humanities Lecture Committee since 2011. Involved with Friends of the Public Libraries of Saginaw from 2004 to 2013, Ms. Ederer held the role of president for four years during that time.

Ms. Ederer became involved in her profession after discovering that some children didn't know how to read, and she felt that she required more information to aid in their education and development. Realizing that children required individualized help, she is particularly proud of helping one child with various projects, who later went on to make enormous strides and received a scholarship for college.

To remain current with industry developments, Ms. Ederer maintains affiliation as a lifetime member of the National Education Association and Michigan Education Association. She has also remained a member of the Michigan Elementary-Middle Schools Principals Association, the International Literacy Association, the Michigan Literacy Association and the Literary Council of Saginaw County. Furthermore, Ms. Ederer is associated with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics and Delta Kappa Gamma, where she served as the president of the Beta Nu chapter from 1982 to 1986.

As a testament to her immense success, Ms. Ederer received a Service Award from the Parent Teacher Association at Shields Elementary School in 1967. Delta Kappa Gamma also honored her with a Woman of Distinction Award in 1979. Listed in several Who's Who publications, Ms. Ederer was selected for inclusion in the fifth and eighth editions of Who's Who in American Education and the 22nd edition of Who's Who in the Midwest.

A native of Saginaw, Ms. Ederer holds an Associate of Arts from Bay City Junior College. Later, she earned a Bachelor of Arts, graduating cum laude from Central Michigan University. Thereafter, she attended Michigan State University, where she received a Master of Arts and Specialist in Education degree. She is a certified elementary teacher and administrative professional in the state of Michigan. In her spare time, Ms. Ederer enjoys sewing, tatting, knitting, reading and gardening.
