With over 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Orme is currently a professor of politics and formerly Manning M. Pattillo professor of liberal arts at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. Teaching on campus since 1983, he formerly taught at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, for two years. During his tenure in academia, he was a research fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from 1990 to 1992.
Throughout his career, Dr. Orme has taught and maintained research efforts in the causes of war and peace, the future of conflict and European politics. Greatly influenced by the desire to understand the world and communicate what he's learned, he has become an accomplished writer in his field. He notably authored "Human Nature and the Causes of War" through Palgrave Macmillan Press in 2018, "The Paradox of Peace: Leaders, Decisions and Conflict Resolution" in 2004, "Deterrence, Reputation and Cold War Cycles" in 1992 and "Political Instability and American Foreign Policy" in 1989. Dr. Orme has also contributed multiple articles to International Security, Security Studies, Political Science Quarterly and Washington Quarterly, among other professional publications.
Born in Portland, Oregon, both of Dr. Orme's parents were teachers. Inspired not only by his parents, but several wonderful teachers in the Eugene, Oregon, public school system, he decided to pursue a career in teaching. Commencing his education with a Bachelor of Arts in history and general social science at the University of Oregon in Eugene, he went on to earn a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in government at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In order to keep abreast of developments in his field, Dr. Orme maintains affiliation with the American Political Science Association and the International Studies Association.
An elected member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, Dr. Orme was named a James Edward Oglethorpe professor at Oglethorpe University from 2015 to 2017. He has also received a Lu Thomason Garrett Award for Meritorious Teaching and a Core Teaching Award from Oglethorpe University and a Donald Agnew Award for Distinguished Service from the Oglethorpe Student Association. In light of all his accomplishments, Dr. Orme has previously been selected for inclusion in the 24th and 25th editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
