He began his career teaching within Baltimore City Schools in Maryland in 1963, remaining in this position for one year before serving as an assistant professor of history at Grambling State University from 1966 to 1972. He subsequently taught and provided educational therapy at the Central City Community Mental Health Center in Los Angeles for one year and the Switzer Center for Educational Therapy in Torrance, CA from 1975 to 1977. Following these appointments, Dr. Johnson found success at a number of academic institutions, such as Los Angeles Southwest College, Denton Public Schools, the Los Angeles Unified School District, and North Central Texas College in Gainesville, TX.
Dr. Johnson pursued a formal education at Fayetteville State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1963, a year in which he participated in a leadership role in Civil Rights demonstrations. He then attended Indiana University, where he received a Master of Science in 1966. He went on to obtain a PhD from the University of North Texas in Denton, TX in 1982. Prior to receiving a doctorate, Dr. Johnson completed postgraduate coursework at the University of California Los Angeles from 1968 to 1969 and Mount St. Mary's University, Los Angeles from 1974 to 1976.
Civically, Dr. Johnson was active in voter registration for the Democratic Party in 1984. Outside of his primary trade, he remains aware of trends in his field through affiliations with numerous organizations, including the National Education Association, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Texas Teachers Association, and Alpha Kappa Mu. Likewise, Dr. Johnson has also consulted extensively in his field.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Johnson has received a number of accolades throughout his impressive career. He was honored with the Crown Zellerbach Foundation Award in 1968, and the Distinguished Alumni Award by the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education in 1985. Furthermore, he was selected for inclusion in the 16th edition of Who's Who in the World and several editions of Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the South and Southwest. Today, Dr. Johnson resides in North Carolina and has been known to enjoying drawing, running, and playing basketball in his spare time.
