He had excelled as the head of ophthalmology at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton since 1985. In addition to his primary role, he worked as director of surgical services and physician adviser of Quality Assurance. Prior to this, he was ophthalmologist and chief of the medical staff at Naval Hospital Naples, Italy (1983-1985); staff ophthalmologist Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton (1976-1982); ophthalmology resident U.C. San Francisco/Naval Hospital Oakland (1973-1976); eye surgeon volunteer with International Eye Association in Harar, Ethiopia, 1975; general medical officer Naval Dispensary Treasure Island, San Francisco (1972- 1973); general medical officer Naval Hospital Taipei, Taiwan (1970-1972); Medical Officer USS Long Beach, CGN9 (1969-1970).
Dr. Edwards initially pursued graduate education at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1964. He continued his studies at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver, graduating as Doctor of Medicine in 1968. He then completed his internship at U.S. Naval Hospital San Diego (1968-1969). Following ophthalmology residency training he became a Diplomat of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 1980 and Fellow of the Academy in 1981.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Edwards has been an active leader in his community. A fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, he is a member of the American Medical Association, the California Medical Association, the California Association of Ophthalmologists, and the American Society of Contemporary Ophthalmologists. Dr. Edwards has also been affiliated with the Association of U.S. Military Surgeons, the American Legion, the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology, the Order of DeMolay, and the Idaho Springs Chevaliers.
Throughout his career, Dr. Edwards has been celebrated for his contributions to the field, having been presented with the U.S. Presidential Certificate of Appreciation for Service in the Armed Forces of the United States. He additionally accepted the U.S. Naval Achievement Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. Likewise, Dr. Edwards has been featured in numerous publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World.
