As she advanced through her career, she served more executive roles with the organization including as an assistant director of education, the assistant vice president, the vice president of human services, and the director of human resources, between 1990 and 1997. Earlier in her career, Ms. Hartog-Vander Aarde contributed as a consultant for the American Mission Hospital in Kuwait, having previously worked as a staff nurse in the emergency department at Holland Hospital in West Michigan.
Before embarking on her professional journey, Ms. Hartog-Vander Aarde graduated from the Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago with a nursing diploma in 1960. Moreover, she went on to attend Montana State University where she secured a Bachelor of Science in nursing during 1975. Continuing her studies with a Master of Science in nursing from the Texas Woman's University in 1982, she concluded her academic pursuits with a Master of Science in healthcare administration from the University of Colorado in 1990. Additionally, Ms. Hartog-Vander Aarde is a registered nurse in the states of Montana, Michigan and Illinois.

In the past, she has been associated with the Coalinga Regional Medical Center in California, the Montana Department of Public Health & Human Services, and the College of Nursing at Montana State University.
