With more than 50 years of professional experience, Dr Hollingworth was appointed as the 23rd Governor-General of Australia from 2001 to 2003. Prior to this, he was elected as the 10th Archbishop of Brisbane from 1989 to 2001, after being the Chaplain, then the Executive Director of the Brotherhood of St Laurence in Melbourne from 1964 to 1989. His first curacy was served as Priest-in-Charge of St Mary's, North Melbourne from 1960 to 1964. In 1980, Dr Hollingworth was elected as a Canon of St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne and in 1985 was consecrated Bishop in charge of Inner City Melbourne.
After National Service in 1953, Dr Hollingworth initially pursued his tertiary education at the University of Melbourne, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1958. He continued studies at Trinity College within that University for the Licentiate of Theology with Honours in 1959, followed later with a Diploma of Social Studies in 1970 and a Master of Arts in Social Work in 1981. His further academic efforts were recognized with the conferring of the Lambeth Degree of Doctor of Letters in 2001, conferred by the Archbishop of Canterbury. He had previously been awarded with Honorary Doctorates from six Australian Universities.

In Victoria he served for a decade as the Chairman of Skyline Education Foundation of Australia and is currently Ambassador. He also served as Chairman, and is now a Life Member, of The Wellington Collingwood, Inc.
He has been notably conferred with the Companion of the Order of Australia, Officer of the Order of the British Empire, a Knight of Justice within the Venerable Order of St John of Jerusalem and the Grand Cross of Merit within the Venerable Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem. He was recognized as Australian of the Year 1991 by the Australian Day Council, received a Centenary of Federation Medal in 2001, and was named as an Australian National Living Treasure in 1997. He is a Senior Fellow of Trinity College, Melbourne and an Honorary Fellow of St John's College, Brisbane. Dr Hollingworth has written widely on poverty and social disadvantage from hands on experience. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
