Now retired, Dr. Massengale has led a prolific career as a certified professional agronomist, certified professional crop scientist, an educator and administrator for more than six decades. Currently serving in the roles of President Emeritus, Chancellor Emeritus, Founding Director Emeritus and Distinguished Professor Emeritus with the University of Nebraska since 2017. Prior to these appointments, he held the post of Vice Chancellor for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Nebraska. From 1958 until 1976 he worked with the University of Arizona in such roles as assistant professor and assistant agronomist, associate agronomist and associate professor and agronomist and professor of agronomy progressing to become Department Head and next the Associate Director and Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture by the conclusion of his tenure at Arizona.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Massengale worked as a research assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Madison having previously served as a teaching assistant at Western Kentucky University. Other career-related endeavors to his credit include serving as a member of the congressionally mandated Advisory Committee to the Secretary of Agriculture for Research, Extension, Education and Economics for 10 years and its chair for eight, Board of Directors of the Nebraska Policy Institute since 1999, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, as well as the National Board for the Study of Sport in Society. He has contributed to the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, the Association of American Universities, the National Collegiate Athletics Association including chair of the Presidents Commission, the College Football Association serving as its chair, the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America as president, the Agronomic Science Foundation as Chair of the board, along with others. An expert in the subject matter, he has written numerous articles for professional journals, chapters in books, and was an editorial board member for both the Agronomy and Crop Science journals. An active member of his community, Dr. Massengale has devoted his time to the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, the Nebraska Historical Society and its Foundation, the Lincoln Community Foundation, the United Way of Lincoln, Bryan Medical Center, Ak-Sar-Ben Board of Governors, Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition and numerous corporate boards. Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Massengale pursued a formal education at Western Kentucky University earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1948 at the age of 18. He went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he obtained a Master of Science in 1954 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1956 at age 22. A respected individual in the industry, Dr. Massengale was presented with a Distinguished Career Award from the Crop Science Society of America, an honorary Doctoral Degree of Humane Letters from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1987 and an honorary Doctor of Science from Senshu University in Tokyo in 1995. Also, Dr. Massengale has been named both Nebraskan of the Year and Midlands Man of the Year.
Between 1956 and 1958, Dr. Massengale served in the United States Army where he contributed as a technical adviser to a classified project. Additional organizations include the American Society for Plant Biology, Society of Range Management, the American Forage and Grassland Council and Phi Kappa Phi. For his accomplishments, he has been the recipient of numerous accolades including the International Award of Merit from the Honor Society of Agriculture, Gamma Sigma Delta, Outstanding Service Awards from the American Society of Agronomy, and the Nebraska Crop Improvement Association along with Presidential Awards from the Nebraska Turfgrass Foundation and the All-American Football Foundation among others. While he maintains memberships with a number of prestigious organizations he is notably a "Fellow" in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Agronomy and the Crop Science Society of America. He was inducted as a charter member into both the Western Kentucky University and Wayne County High School Halls of Fame. In recognition of his many contributions to the University of Nebraska, the State of Nebraska, to the Nation and to his profession, the University of Nebraska has named a residential center in his honor. Outside of his primary responsibilities, Dr. Massengale enjoys reading, travel, golf and other physical activities.
