With a career spanning more than 35 years, Dr. Papadakos is the director of the division of critical care medicine with the School of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Rochester in New York, a position he has held since 2000. He has also been a professor of respiratory care with the State University of New York since 1996. Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Papadakos began his education with a Bachelor of Arts from New York University in New York City in 1979 before obtaining a Doctor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City in 1983.
Dr. Papadakos went on to complete an internship and surgical residency at Roosevelt Hospital in New York City between 1983 and 1985. Pursuing an additional residency in anesthesiology at the Mount Sinai Hospital from 1985 to 1987, became a fellow in critical care medicine at the hospital from 1987 to 1988. In 1988, Dr. Papakados joined the School of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Rochester as an assistant professor of surgery, anesthesiology and neurosurgery, rising to the role of full professor by 2003.
An expert in his field, Dr. Papadakos' research focuses on pulmonary critical care management; including work on septic shock and oxygen delivery, the pathophysiology of acute lung failure, and the use of nitric oxide in acute respiratory distress syndrome. Furthermore, he is extensively published in professional journals, and has been featured as a guest expert for various media outlets including CNN, The New York Times and The Washington Post. An honorary member of the Korean Society of Critical Care Medicine since 2011, Dr. Papadakos was recognized for his accomplishments with a President's Citation from the Society of Critical Care Medicine in 1996.
