With over 40 years of professional excellence to his credit, Dr. Desai spent nearly his entire career with the University of Toronto. Recognized as a professor emeritus of physics with the university since 2004, he served as the vice dean of the School of Graduate Studies from 2005 to 2006. Joining the university as an assistant professor in 1968, he rose to the rank of full professor by 1978, teaching in this capacity until his retirement in 2006. Over the course of his tenure with the University of Toronto, Dr. Desai also spent time as the associate dean of division three of the School of Graduate Studies, the co-chair of the Materials Institute, an associate chair and coordinator of graduate studies in the Department of Physics.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Desai cultivated his expertise as a research associate with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge from 1966 to 1968 and a scientific officer at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai, India, from 1957 to 1962. Alongside his primary responsibilities, he served as a visiting professor at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Germany in 1987, a visiting scientist with IBM in San Jose, California, from 1981 to 1982 and a visiting associate with the California Institute of Technology in 1975. Dr. Desai has also donated his time to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in Washington, DC.
An accomplished writer in his field, Dr. Desai was a regular contributor of articles to professional journals throughout his career. More recently, he was a contributor to "Epitaxial Growth in Dislocation-Free Strained Asymmetric Alloy Films," which was published in Physical Review B in 2010. He has also authored and co-authored such works as a book entitled "Dynamics of Self-Organized and Self-Assembled Structures" in 2009, and reviews on "Interfacial Dynamics" in 1986 and "Theory of the Liquid-Vapor Interface" in 1981. For excellence in his research, Dr. Desai was a grantee of the National Research Council of Canada from 1968 to 2012.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Desai pursued an education at the University of Mumbai, previously known as the University of Bombay, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science, with honors, in 1957. After coming to North America, he continued his studies and earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, in 1966. A fellow of the American Physical Society, Dr. Desai maintains professional affiliation with the Materials Research Society and the Canadian Association of Physicists in an effort to remain up to date with developments in his field.
