After accruing nearly four decades of practiced experience in education, Susanna Mason Defever retired from her role as an English professor for St. Clair County Community College.

After accruing nearly four decades of practiced experience in education, Ms. Defever retired from her role as an English professor for St. Clair County Community College. At the start of her career, she gained valuable expertise in English, journalism and theatre education with Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. Over the years, she also used her expertise as a speaker in her field, a director for various writing workshops and chair of many teaching committees. Today, she serves as an editor for a local author, Dr. W.R. Kreis, who has been writing a series of historical fiction novels since 2007. Although her career has been filled with highlights, she is especially proud of the editing she has done for such works as "The Heritage of Ira" and "An Enduring Heritage," and authoring "Twists and Turns," "The Wonders of Mid-Winter" and "The Jester: A Teller of Old Tales."
An expert in her field, Ms. Defever holds a Bachelor of Arts from Central Michigan University and a Master of Arts from Wayne State University. In between degrees, she also pursued postgraduate studies in theatre with Michigan State University. She has been an active member of the National Education Association, the Community College Humanities Association, the Michigan Council of Teachers of English and the Michigan College English Association, among several others. She continues to be active in her community as newsletter editor for the SC4 Retirees and served on the boards for the Marine City Concert Series (32 years), also doing publicity, and St. Clair County Community Mental Health Authority (14 years). She still judges student writing contests for the latter.
In light of her outstanding work, Ms. Defever earned the National Institute of Staff Organization Development Excellence Award for Teaching through the University of Austin in 1990, a Sperry Grant in 1994, the LAND Leadership Award in 1995-1996, a Lifetime Achievement Award through SC4 Patterns publication in 2008, and a "Making the Difference" Award by SCCCMH board in 2014. Ms. Defever intends to continue writing, editing and judging contests as well as giving back to her community in various ways. She is a member of the local Friends of the Library.
