He subsequently served on the faculty of Indiana University School of Medicine teaching cardiac and general thoracic surgery. Over the years, he gained valuable expertise in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, serving on the staff of Columbia Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida, Memorial Hospitals in Ormond Beach and Palm Coast, Florida and as chief of thoracic surgery at Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, Florida. Although his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Cromartie is especially proud of practicing anesthesia and general medicine in situations of wartime crisis while stationed in Long Binh, Quang Tri, and Chu Lai, Vietnam with the U.S. Army in 1971.
A diplomate through the American Board of Surgery, the American Board of Laser Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Cromartie has earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, he is affiliated with the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Chest Physicians, the International College of Surgeons, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, the James D. Rives Surgical Society and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, to name a few organizations. Dr. Cromartie published multiple articles in medical journals and co-authored the medical textbook, High-Tech Terror: Recognition, Management, and Prevention of Biological, Chemical and Nuclear Injuries Secondary to Acts of Terrorism. He also has authored the following novels under the name Sam Cromartie: The Weather Girl's Assassin, Romanov Curse, Romanov Quest, Himmler's Mistress, Ultimate Duty, Good Fortune's Curse, and An Innocent Lie.
Screenplay scripts for a number of these novels have received awards at international film festivals. Furthermore, he has been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
