With nearly 50 years of professional experience, Ms. Howard has been a staff nurse with the University of South Carolina Upstate Health Services in Spartanburg since 2003. Prior to obtaining her current role, she worked in home care services for the Appalachia III Health District of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental from 1977 to 2002, serving as the Director from 1988 to 2002. She was a public health supervisor with the Clarke County Health Department in Athens, Georgia, from 1972 to 1976. Earlier in her career, she was a public health nurse with the Richland County Health Department in Columbia, South Carolina, from 1971 to 1972, having been a staff nurse with Baptist Hospital in Columbia since 1970.
Ms. Howard began her career as a student at Mercer University, completing coursework from 1964 to 1966. She continued her studies with the University of South Carolina Upstate, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1970. She is a registered nurse in the state of South Carolina and a certified CPR instructor.
A respected voice in her areas of interest, Ms. Howard has been an active leader in her community. A charter member of the board of directors of the Helping Hands Ministry, she has served as a member of the Community Band, the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Society, Zonta International, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, and Daughters of American Revolution. She has also served on the advisory board of the Spartanburg County Community Long Term Care, the Caring Coalition Council on Aging, and the FACT Cancer Society in Spartanburg.
Throughout her career, Ms. Howard has been recognized for her contributions, including having received the Home Health Care Services Administrator Award from the State of South Carolina. Married to Robert Inman Howard Jr. since 1966, she is the proud mother of two daughters and grandmother of four grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoys music, playing the piano and flute, and gardening.
