Celebrating a long and distinguished career in economics for more than 40 years, Dr. Cline has been the president of Economics International, Inc., a research and consulting corporation, since 1981. From 1981 through 2017 he was a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, a private, nonpartisan, non-profit institution for rigorous, intellectually open and in-depth study and discussion of international economic policy in Washington since 1981. In 2018 he became Senior Fellow Emeritus at the Institute. Dr. Cline has also been a senior fellow at the Center for Global Development, where he held a joint appointment with the Peterson Institute in 2002 – 2011. A non-profit think tank founded in November 2001 and based in Washington, DC, and London, the center focuses on international development, working to reduce global poverty and improve lives through innovative economic research.
A seasoned economist, prior to his work at the Center for Global Development, Dr. Cline served as the deputy managing director and chief economist of the Institute of International Finance in Washington. He was also a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute and a deputy director of trade and development research for the U.S. Treasury Department. Further, Dr. Cline devoted time to the advisory board on the U.S. Export Import Bank and as an assistant professor, lecturer, visiting lecturer and professor at Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies and Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo.
Dr. Cline has authored more than 20 books over the past 50 years. His first book, "Economic Consequences of a Land Reform in Brazil," was published in 1970, which was followed by "Potential Effects of Income Redistribution" in 1972 and "Trade Negotiations in the Tokyo Round" in 1978. His most recent book, "The Right Balance for Banks," was released in 2017.
Attending two of the most prestigious universities, Dr. Cline is an alumnus of Princeton University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in public affairs, summa cum laude, in 1963. He also graduated from Yale University with a Master of Arts in economics in 1964 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1969. Dr. Cline is a member of the American Economic Association. A 1964 Woodrow Wilson fellow and 1965 Ford Foundation fellow, he was also the recipient of a 1993 Harold and Margaret Sprout Award from the International Studies Association for his book "The Economics of Global Warming."
