With more than 35 years of professional experience, Dr. Boal has been recognized as president emeritus of the Interlochen Center for the Arts since 1995, having been president since 1989. Prior to obtaining this position, he was director of arts and performance programs with National Public Radio from 1982 to 1989, vice president and general manager of Station WETA-FM from 1978 to 1983, and director of Station KMWU-FM from 1976 to 1978. From 1973 to 1976, he was president of the St. Louis Conservatory, and from 1970 to 1973, he was a professor and chair of music with the State University of New York at Fredonia. Earlier in his career, he was the dean and pianist of the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University from 1966 to 1970, head of the piano department at Bradley University from 1960 to 1966, and a member of the faculty at Hastings College from 1958 to 1960.
Dr. Boal first pursued an education with the University of Colorado, where he obtained a Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Music Education in 1953. He then joined Indiana University, completing a Master of Music in 1956. He subsequently returned to the University of Colorado, earning a Doctor of Musical Arts in 1959.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Boal has been an active leader in his community. The former chair of the Eastern Public Radio Network, he is a member of the College Music Society, Pi Kappa Lambda, Mu Phi Epsilon and Phi Mu Alpha. He also served on the advisory board of the University of Colorado College of Music and on the board of directors and as chair of the Peak Association of the Arts. In addition, he is a former trustee of Alma College and the Frasier Meadows Retirement Community.
Throughout his career, Dr. Boal has been recognized for his contributions. A Woodrow Wilson teaching fellow, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in Professional Music and the George Norlin Award from the University of Colorado. He has also been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Entertainment and Who's Who in the West.
