Now retired, Dr. Yanni excelled as a pharmacologist for more than three decades. During his 22-year tenure with Alcon Laboratories in Fort Worth, Texas, he held the posts of assistant director, director, and senior director between 1990 and 2000. As he advanced with the company, he held the roles of vice president and vice president of pharmaceutical research until his departure in 2012. Earlier in his career, he was associated with A.H. Robins Company in Richmond, Virginia, where he worked as a biologist, senior research biologist and research associate from 1980 to 1988. Dr. Yanni briefly contributed to Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York, as a group leader from 1988 to 1990.
Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Yanni secured a Bachelor of Science from Allegheny College in 1974. During his studies with the institution, he was honored as an Alden Scholar for the maintenance of a 3.5 or higher grade point average. He further attended The Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he earned a Master of Science in 1979 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1982. Dr. Yanni concluded his academic efforts by completing the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 2000.
Throughout his career, Dr. Yanni's work and research led to a number of achievements. The owner of patents in the area of allergy, he was responsible for the identification of the anti-allergic potential of heterocyclic amines, the discovery of the drugs Patanol and Emadine for the treatment of ocular allergies, and the discovery of Nevanac for inflammation and pain. Additionally, he is credited with creating the description for the secretory response of human conjunctival mast cells. For these impressive feats, he was the recipient of the Sir James Black Award for Contributions to Drug Discovery by the British Pharmacological Society in 2017.
A member of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Dr. Yanni maintains professional alignment with the New York Academy of Sciences, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the Society for Leukocyte Biology, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, and the Virginia Academy of Science. Utilizing his expertise and knowledge of the field, he has contributed articles to professional journals.
