A native of Annang, Nigeria, Dr. Umana arrived to the United States in 1977. Soon thereafter, he enrolled at East Texas State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in 1980. Subsequently, Dr. Umana concluded his studies at Texas Southern University, obtaining a Master of Education in 1983 and a Doctor of Education in 1988.
With a certification in professional counseling, Dr. Umana worked as a counselor of mental health in Terrell, Texas, from 1979 to 1981. Moreover, he briefly served as a counselor for the Richmond State School in Texas from 1982 to 1983 before accepting the position of an assistant instructor at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas, in 1983. Since 1989, Dr. Umana has contributed as a vocational rehabilitation counselor with the aforementioned university.
Dr. Umana began his career as a headmaster for a government school in Cross River State, Nigeria, between 1970 and 1976. A member of the National Council of Nigerian and Cameroon Party, he was active as the director of the Young Farmers Club and a secretary for the Village Council in Ikot Akpan Afaha, Nigeria, in 1976. A member of the American College Personnel Association, Dr. Umana also maintains his affiliation with the American Association of Counseling and Development, Phi Delta Kappa, the Akwalbom State Association of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Foundation.
For his accomplishments in the field, Dr. Umana has been the recipient of numerous accolades and honors. He has been notably presented with the Excellence on Education and Leadership Award from the Nigerian Foundation, the 30-Year Certificate of Service with the state of Texas, an Outstanding Patronage Award from the Akwalbom State Association of Nigeria, and recognition as a scholar for the Government of Nigeria. Likewise, Dr. Umana has been selected for inclusion the 20th and 21st editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
