A native of Wiesbaden, Germany, Dr. Francke graduated with a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Munich in 1967. After relocating to the United States in 1969, she trained in pediatrics and human genetics and became a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics, for which she served as the member of the board of directors between 1981 and 1984.
Dr. Francke began her career as an assistant professor of the University of California San Diego from 1973 to 1978. Subsequently, she contributed to Yale University as an associate professor in 1978, completing her tenure with the institution as a full professor in 1988. She subsequently excelled as a professor of genetics at Stanford University, a post she has held since 1989. Other professional endeavors to Dr. Francke's credit include working as an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute from 1989 – 2000 while at Stanford University, and as a member of the mammalian genetics study section with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
Civically, Dr. Francke has volunteered her time as a professional advisor for the National Marfan Foundation and the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation between 1990 and 1999. A respected voice in her field, she has authored over 500 medical publications to date. A member of the American Society of Human Genetics, she maintains a professional affiliation with the American College of Medical Genetics, the Human Genome Organization, the Society for Inherited Metabolic Disorders, and the National Academy of Medicine. For her impressive accomplishments, Dr. Francke has been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who of American Women.
