With 55 years of professional experience to his credit, Dr. McCurdy has been a distinguished professor with the Medical University of South Carolina since 2004, having been a professor of psychiatry with the school from 1968 to 2004 and a chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences from 1968 to 1982. In addition to his primary roles, he was psychiatrist-in-chief at the Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital and a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania from 1982 to 1990, and a visiting professor at the University of London from 1974 to 1975. Earlier in his career, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry with Emory University from 1966 to 1968, and he was with the Psychiatry Training Branch at the National Institutes of Mental Health from 1964 to 1966.
Dr. McCurdy first pursued an education with the University of North Carolina, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1956. He then joined the Medical University of South Carolina, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1960 and holding a rotating internship until 1961. He then joined North Carolina Memorial Hospital for a residency in psychiatry from 1961 to 1964, and he was a psychoanalytic trainee with Columbia University Psychoanalytic Clinic from 1967 to 1968. He is licensed in psychiatry in the state of South Carolina and by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. McCurdy has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. A fellow and past president of the American College of Psychiatrists, he is a member of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the Association of Academic Psychiatry, and the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, where he has also served as chairman. He has also been active with the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the American Psychiatric Association and the Cosmos Club.
Throughout his career, Dr. McCurdy has been recognized for his contributions. The recipient of the Humanitarian Award from Las Societe Francaise, he was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by Governor Nikki Haley. Likewise, he received the Earl B. Higgins Diversity Achievement Award from the Medical University of South Carolina and a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the George C. Ham Society. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
