Ms. Scott grew up surrounded by the business of journalism, realizing in high school her gift for language. She was selected for the Michelle Clark Fellowship program at Columbia University in 1974 and completed coursework at Barnard College in Manhattan from 1966 to 1968 and Spelman College in Atlanta from 1989 to 1990. Ms. Scott earned certificates from Leadership Atlanta in 1991 and from the Regional Leadership Institute in 1992. She was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters from Argosy University in 2003.
Ms. Scott began her career in journalism at the Atlanta Constitution in 1974, hoping to work at a publication with a traditionally white audience in order to address stereotypes and lack of media representation for professional black women. She subsequently served there as a reporter, assistant city editor, cable television programming editor, manager, video edition director, and vice president of community affairs through 1993. From 1993 until 1997, she served as director of Diversity for Cox Enterprises, the corporate headquarters/owner of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Ms. Scott was the first black woman in Atlanta to hold a number of these positions, an achievement of which she is most proud. She went to the Atlanta Daily World – the newspaper her grandfather started in 1928 – in 1997, using the skills she honed at the Atlanta Journal and Constitution to publish it through 2014. In 2014, Ms. Scott became vice president of membership at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, where she was part of the executive team that opened the museum in June 2014.
Ms. Scott has been featured as a political commentator on FOX-5 Atlanta since 2002. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and professional distinctions for her contributions to journalism and her community, and was named one of the Top 100 Women of Influence by the Atlanta Business League for more than 15 years. She is a board member of the Booker T. Washington High School Legacy Foundation and the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival. Ms. Scott co-wrote the screenplay "Beechtree Forest" in 2013 and was the primary researcher and writer of "The History of Atlanta National Association for the Advancement of Colored People" in 1983.
