Ms. Walker is an accomplished visual artist, writer and educator with over 60 years of experience. She began her career as a student at the College of Emporia, in Emporia, Kansas, completing coursework from 1948 to 1949 before joining the University of Kansas and obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1951 and a Bachelor of Science in 1954. Relocating to New York to pursue elementary teaching certification, Ms. Walker attended Columbia University in New York City, completing her education with postgraduate coursework from 1957 to 1959.
Ms. Walker began teaching at School District 17 in Hicksville, New York, in 1954, continuing in this role for 29 years until she retired in 1986. Alongside her position as a teacher, she pursued her creative passions, working as a freelance artist beginning in 1974 and serving as the editor of Xanadu and Process from 1979 to 2001. After her retirement from teaching, she dedicated herself fully to the arts, holding a position on the decentralization panel of the New York State Council for the Arts from 1989 to 1991 and acting as the treasurer of the Long Island Poetry Collective in Huntington, New York, from 1988 to 2001, where she also acted as co-chair from 1991-2001. Ms. Walker has been an instructor at the Taproot Workshop Inc. in Stony Brook, New York, since 1994.
Also the author of "Pandora's Box: Collected Poems," which was published in 2006, Ms. Walker has shown her paintings and sculptures all across the United States and in Europe. In 2018, "Lois Walker: A Retrospective," a large collection of her paintings and assemblages was shown in The Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery of The Art League of Long Island. For her work, she has been the recipient of numerous accolades, notably being named Best in Show in a group show in Lewiston, Idaho, in 2000. She was also recognized with an Award of Excellence from the Firehouse Gallery in 2004 and a Third Award from the Palm Springs Art Museum in 1998. In her leisure time, Ms. Walker enjoys travel and lectures on the fine arts.
