Before becoming an esteemed educator, Dr. Kim pursued higher education with a premedical degree and Doctor of Medicine from Seoul National University in the Republic of Korea in 1955 and 1959, respectively. Dr. Kim is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery.
Dr. Kim's career path began as a resident of surgery at the Capital Army Hospital in Seoul in 1959. He subsequently served as resident of surgery, clinical assistant of surgery, assistant attending physician, associate attending physician, and attending physician at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City and professor of surgery at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, having held the latter position since 1983. Previously, he worked as a staff surgeon at the First KOKA Surgical Hospital in the Republic of Korea and the director of surgery at Elmhurst Hospital Center in New York.
Outside of his professional responsibilities, Dr. Kim remains informed of advancements and changes in his field through affiliations with several organizations. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, as well as a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, the Association for Academic Surgery, the Medical Society of Queens and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract. He is also a member of the New York Surgical Society, the International Society for Digestive Surgery and the International College of Surgeons.
In 1965, Dr. Kim received a Bronze Star Medal with V from the United States of America, a Chungmu Medal from the Republic of Korea, and the Silver Star from Vietnam. In recognition of achievements in his field, Dr. Kim was featured in the 24th edition of Who's Who in the East in 1992.
