Now retired from a successful 35-year career in education, Mr. Dyer was a sixth-grade teacher, master teacher and career level teacher in the state of Maine. First teaching in Wells, Maine, for one year after college in 1965, he then accepted an opportunity to teach for the Maine School Administrative District #71 in Kennebunk, where he remained for the duration of his career. Upon retiring in 1999, Mr. Dyer spent another 10 years in education technology in Shapleigh, Maine.

Some of Mr. Dyer's civic duties have included serving on the board of directors for the Kennebunk Youth Hockey Association, as secretary of committee troop #304 for the Boy Scouts of America, and as a member of the conservation commission of the Town of Kennebunk. In his retirement he continues to serve as a volunteer after completing a Citizens Police Academy course.

Mr. Dyer is a graduate of Colby College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1964. He soon after earned a Master of Arts in teaching at the University of Maine in 1966. He was a certified master teacher in the state of Maine.

Since embarking upon his career, Mr. Dyer has been active with numerous professional organizations. He is a past president of the Kennebunk Educators Association and past board of directors member of the York County Audubon Society. He remains active as a member of the National Education Association, the Maine Teachers Association, the National Science Teachers Association and the Satellite Educators Association, among others. For a few years he has been the secretary and handles the publicity for the Maine Association of Former Intelligence Officers (AFIO).

Mr. Dyer represented the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program in 1996. The program provides participants with an overview of Japan's education system, culture and people through a three-week immersion program. Mr. Dyer also established a telephone conferencing program whereby his students researched the addresses of people they admired and then wrote letters asking for interviews. If they received a positive response, the students conducted a live conversation via a speakerphone. Interviewees included Henry Winkler, Roger Staubach and Ed Muskie. Mr. Dyer secured numerous grants from the Department of Education between 1971 and 1987 and the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in 1990. In recognition of his career, Mr. Dyer most notably received a Colby College Teacher of the Year Award in 1999. He has since also received a Louis Lambert Award from the Maine Science Teachers Association, a Gary Lauten Award for Forest Watch from the University of New Hampshire, and a Milken National Educator Award from the Milken Family Foundation. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been featured in the 50th edition of Who's Who in America, the fourth edition of Who's Who in American Education, and the 25th and 26th editions of Who's Who in the East.
