Supported by more than 55 years of practiced experience in music, education and archaeology, Ms. Watts most recently worked as a teacher and consultant of archaeology at the Tucson Unified School District beginning 1983, a middle school teacher of music and performing arts beginning in 1987, and an elementary school chorus teacher beginning in 1979. Alongside these appointments, she served the Tucson Unified School District as a chorus director from 1979 to 1984 and an intermediate head division teacher and music consultant from 1983 to 1984. Formerly serving the Clayton County Public Schools as a music consultant from 1964 to 1966, Ms. Watts commenced her career as a music teacher at the Westchester Township School District in 1963, holding the role for one year.
Civically involved as well, Ms. Watts spent time as a project chair of the Children's Museum Tucson, as well as a former member of the University of Arizona Panhellenic Council from 1971 to 1972. A past music research project committee member of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, she was also involved in the General Federation of Women's Club Arizona and as president of the Sahuaro Junior Woman's Club in Tucson.
To prepare for her career, Ms. Watts pursued formal education at Louisiana State University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in music education in 1962. Completing postgraduate studies at the University of Georgia in 1965, she later earned a Master of Education from the University of Arizona in 1987. Ms. Watts is a certified elementary teacher and music teacher in the states of Indiana, Georgia, Louisiana and Arizona.
A prolific author, Ms. Watts most recently wrote "Sleeping in Dixie's Feather Bed: Growing Up White in the Segregated South" in 2018 and "Round 'Em Up and the Marshmallow Treat" in 2019. She also authored "Archaeology is More Than a Dig" and contributed myriad articles to esteemed journals in her field. To remain abreast of developments in her areas of interest, she maintains affiliation with such organizations as the National Education Association, the Tucson Education Association, the Arizona Education Association, the National Association for Music Educators, the National Audubon Society and the Arizona Science Teachers Association.
As a testament to her success and longevity in the field, Ms. Watts was named Clubwoman of the Year by the Arizona Federation Junior Women's Club in 1972. She was also recognized with a Search for Excellence in Science Award by the Arizona Science Teachers Association in 1985. In light of all her accomplishments, Ms. Watts has previously highlighted in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
