Dr. Wiseman began his career by pursuing a Bachelor of Science at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, from which he graduated in 1959. He had intended to become a farmer, following his father and his brother into the trade, but was advised to pursue higher education instead. During his junior year at Texas Tech University, Dr. Wiseman was encouraged by his father scout cotton insects, an experience that transformed his love of insects into a career in entomology. He concluded his academic efforts at Kansas State University, in Manhattan, Kansas, graduating with a Master of Science in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1967.
Upon his graduation, Dr. Wiseman became a research assistant at Kansas State University, serving in this position until 1966. Subsequently, he accepted a post the USDA Agricultural Research Service as a research entomologist, working in Stillwater, Oklahoma, until 1967. That same year. Dr. Wiseman was approached by Dr. Alton N. Sparks, a laboratory director at the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Tifton, who offered him a new career opportunity. He would continue as a research entomologist for the Tifton-based laboratory from 1967 until his retirement in 1998, a move he credits with saving his career as well as his passion for entomology.
Dr. Wiseman is widely published in professional journals, with research focused on the resistance to insect attacks in corn, sorghum, and cucurbitaceae. In 1986, he was the recipient of an Achievement Award from the Florida Entomological Society for this exemplary work. Dr. Wiseman has been a member of the adjunct faculty of the department of entomology and nematology at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, and at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, since 1970, and is a fellow of the Entomological Society of America. Moreover, his research includes agricultural consulting in the areas of transgenesis and insect resistance. In his retirement, Dr. Wiseman has become an avid genealogist.
