Since 1995, Mr. Schaeffer has excelled as a talented executive producer, designer and founder of Springfield Contemporary Theatre, Inc. in Springfield, MO. Dedicated to the production of contemporary works and classic works that can be re-energized through a contemporary view, the Springfield Contemporary Theatre is a non-profit production company that formerly housed in the Vandivort Center Theatre. Throughout his career, Mr. Schaeffer has been a production designer for dozens of plays, musicals, dances and operas, including "Camelot," "La Boheme," "The Magic Flute," "Kiss Me, Kate" and "Annie."
In the performing arts industry for more than 50 years, Mr. Schaeffer began his career as a technical director at Springfield Little Theater in Missouri in 1966. Later becoming an executive producer for Springfield Little Theater for three years beginning in 1970, he worked for another 10 years as the theater's designer between 1980 and 1990. He notably served as the lighting designer at the Virginia Museum Theater in Richmond for one year and as the production manager and designer at the New Electric Dinner Theatre in Springfield for three years. Mr. Schaeffer also found success as a designer for the Springfield Ballet from 1978 to 1995.
Responsible for renovating the Landers Theater, which was purchased by Springfield Little Theater in 1970, Mr. Schaeffer also renovated the Vandivort Center Theatre in 1995 prior to the establishment of the Springfield Contemporary Theatre. Furthermore, he designed for Summer Tent Theatre at his alma mater, Southwest Missouri State University, multiple times between 1970 and 1990. Likewise, Mr. Schaeffer further contributed to the Southwest Missouri State University as a guest lecturer in the department of communications between 1984 and 1985.
Mr. Schaeffer was additionally appointed to the board of the Springfield Contemporary Theatre as well as to the board of directors for the Springfield Ballet, for which he held the posts of the treasurer and the vice president. He also maintained involvement as the chair of the subcommittee designing a Arts Center which became the Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts, on the campus of Missouri State University. He served as president and treasurer of the Springfield Area Arts Council and was a member of the dance advisory committee at the Missouri Arts Council.
In light of his exemplary accomplishments, Mr. Schaeffer has been featured in the first three editions of Who's Who in Entertainment. Previously, he pursued an education at Southwest Missouri State University, earning a Bachelor's degree in 1969 and a Master's degree in 1978. In 2001, Mr. Schaeffer was presented with an Ozzie Award from the Springfield Area Arts Council.
