With over 50 years of professional experience to his credit, Mr. Savage has served as co-founder and chairman emeritus of Savage & Associates, Inc., since 2002. Prior to stepping down, he excelled as president since 1975 and as executive vice president since 1959. He served on the board of directors of three companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange: Cedar Fair, Centerior Energy and First Energy. In addition, the boards of Solar Cells and Solar Fields, and Columbus Life Insurance Company. Savage & Associates, Inc., was selected for Top Work Places two years in a row (published by The Toledo Blade).
He graduated from The University of Toledo with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He served 11 years on the board of trustees of The University of Toledo. During that time he was the visionary who brought about the 149,000 square foot Student Recreation Center, which today is still considered a modern facility. At The University of Toledo homecoming game in 2003, he was the recipient of the Gold T Award presented to the outstanding alumnus. He was the catalyst for building the $18 million College of Business building at The University of Toledo, which opened in 2010, and bears the name Savage & Associates Complex for Business Learning & Engagement. At The University of Toledo Spring commencement in 2013, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Commercial Science degree, an honor rarely extended to people in the Toledo area.
A respected community leader and the driver of many major projects in the area, he is a former six-year City of Toledo Councilman, and Vice Mayor (President City Council). He was the top "vote getter" for the City of Toledo. He served for seven years as President of St. Vincent Hospital board. He was given the Distinguished Service Award by St. Vincent Medical Center, one of the top two medical establishments in Northwestern Ohio.
He has chaired the Distinguished Clown Corps for 20 years, which sponsors the City of Toledo Holiday parade. Membership was tripled under his leadership to 115. As co-founder of the Imagination Station, Toledo's science museum, he formed "The Science Society," which has gifted more than $1 million, on two different occasions, to support modernizing the Imagination Station. He served seven years on the Bowling Green State University board of trustees and was vice chairman. He was a member of Toledo Area's Committee of 100, and past president of the Toledo Opera. He was a 50-year member of the Million Dollar Round table, and member of GAMA. Annually GAMA selects one financial services leader nationally for the GAMA Hall of fame; Mr. Savage was the 1999 inductee.
Throughout his career, Mr. Savage has been acknowledged as a great community leader. He had an early start being named Toledo's Outstanding Young man of the Year in 1964. He was named The University of Toledo Pacemaker in 1965, and recently he and his wife, Sue, were named 2018 Outstanding Philanthropist of Northwestern Ohio.
