Dr. Kavaler-Adler has been in private practice as a Clinical Psychologist, Psychotherapist, and Psychoanalyst in New York City for more than 40 years. She has also been the Founder and Executive Director, and Board President, of the Object Relations Institute for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis since 1991. Specializing in individual psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, and in Couples and Group psychotherapy, and in groups for mourning, supervision, self expression, and writing, Dr. Kavaler-Adler works with people suffering from all kinds of trauma, symptoms and problems, and particularly with those blocked in creative self expression, interpersonal communication, and intimacy. Known for intensive psychotherapeutic work, Dr. Kavaler-Adler sometimes uses her expertise in other modalities, such as Guided Meditative Visualization, the nonverbal attunement acquired in her background as a dancer and Dance Therapist, and in using creative writing as a therapeutic process. Dr. Kavaler-Adler shares her 43 years of expertise in Practice by supervising many Mental Health Professionals, in both individual supervision, and in online group supervision. She offers such supervisory consultation by phone and online "Go to Meetings" formats, as well as in person.

Writing extensively in her field, Dr. Kavaler-Adler has published six books and over 70 articles in professional journals and edited books, and has several books in press as well. Her most popular books are "The Compulsion to Create: Women Writers and Their Demon Lovers (Routledge 1993, ORI Academic Press 2013); "The Creative Mystique: From Red Shoes Frenzy to Love and Creativity" (Routledge 1996, ORI Academic Press 2014); "Mourning, Spirituality and Psychic Change…" (Routledge 2003, national Gradiva Award from NAAP 2004); "Anatomy of Regret…," (Karnac/Routledge 2013); and "The Klein-Winnicott Dialectic: Transformative New Metapsychology and Interactive Clinical Theory" (Karnac/Routledge 2014). Dr. Kavaler-Adler has received 16 awards for her writing, including the prestigious Gradiva Award from the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (and 3 other Gradiva Award nominations).

Dr. Kavaler-Adler earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology from Adelphi University in 1974. She is a Diplomate and Fellow of the American Board and Academy of Psychoanalysis through the Division of Psychoanalysis of the American Psychological Association. She is certified as a Clinical Psychologist in New York State. She is a Supervisor of Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis for 35 years, since graduating from two years of Supervisory studies with the Postgraduate Psychoanalytic Society in 1985. She has served as a Supervisor and Training Analyst for the National Institute for the Psychotherapies (NIP), as well as for the Object Relations Institute (ORI), where she has also actively taught as a faculty member. In 2008 Dr. Kavaler-Adler received an Honorary Doctorate in Literature from Ignatius University after the publication of her two internationally known books on well-known artists and writers. She is also on the Editorial Board of the online journal, "Psychoanalysis: Psychoanalytic Critique," published by International Psychoanalytic Books.

Dr. Kavaler-Adler is affiliated with numerous psychoanalytic associations and societies, including the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (NAAP), the Postgraduate Psychoanalytic Society, the Division of Psychoanalysis Society, APA, and the National Institute for the Psychotherapies Professional Organization (NIPPA).
