Dr. Craig began his path toward medicine as a teenager, when he observed how a small town doctor, Dr. D.B. Andrews was able to help and treat a home-bound neighbor with a chronic disease. He was inspired to become a doctor in order to help others in similar ways. He attended the Middle Tennessee State College in Murfreesboro in 1953, before completing a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Tennessee, Memphis in 1956. Following these accomplishments, he served in the United States Air Force from 1957 to 1962. Dr. Craig went on to conclude his formal studies at the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned a Master of Public Health in 1963.
Embarking on his career in 1966, Dr. Craig was a physician for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Chattanooga before becoming their chief medical officer from 1969 to 1974. From 1974 to 1998, he served as medical director and later as corporate vice president and director of health Park Nicolette (in Minnesota) Institute for Research and Education from 1997 to 2000. He has been an officer in several professional and lay organizations and has an author of twenty publications.
A diplomat of the American Board of Preventive Medicine and a Fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Craig served on the advisory board to the director fo the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention between 1996 and 1999. He has also been the recipient of numerous professional awards, including ten physician recognition awards from the American Medical Association and a delegate to its House of Delegates from 1990 to 1996. He received a 225th Anniversary Medallion Award from the University of Pittsburgh in 2013. Furthermore, Dr. Craig was presented with the Knudsen Award in 2000 which is the highest honor granted by the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
