With more than 45 years of experience in education and nursing to her credit, Dr. Savoy has become an authority in her field. After obtaining her Bachelor of Science from Columbia University in 1970, she started her career as a staff nurse in the medical intensive care unit of Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami in 1970, going on to serve in the same position at Boston University Medical Center from 1972 to 1974, the Long Beach VA Healthcare System from 1974 to 1975, and the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from 1975 to 1977. After completing her Masters in Nursing as a cardiovascular clinical nurse specialist at University of California Los Angeles in 1978, she served as the critical care clinical nurse specialist at Anaheim Memorial Medical Center in 1978. Dr Savoy's first academic position, as a practitioner-teacher, was at Rush University in Chicago from 1982 to 1988. While at Rush, her clinical practice shifted to serving as a research associate in the department of neurosurgery from 1984 to 1988. After leaving Rush, she continued the development of a novel therapy working as a clinical research associate at Medtronic, Inc., from 1988 to 1991. Dr. Savoy served as a neuroscience clinician in the acute stroke unit at DMC Harper University Hospital in 1989 before returning to academia in 1991 as an instructor in the Wayne State University College of Nursing in Detroit. While at Wayne State, Dr. Savoy held a joint appointment as the surgical trauma clinical nurse specialist at the Detroit Receiving Hospital while also serving as the coordinator of the new critical care clinical nurse specialist masters in nursing degree program at Wayne State until 1995. Dr. Savoy returned to clinical practice serving as the critical care clinical nurse specialist, then cardiology clinical nurse specialist at Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw Michigan during which time she obtained her PhD in nursing at Loyola University Chicago in 2010. While completing her PhD, Dr. Savoy returned to academia as an assistant professor of nursing at Saginaw Valley State University in 2005. In 2017, she ended her career as an associate professor of nursing at Saginaw Valley State University.
She is certified as a nurse educator (CNE), a clinical nurse leader (CNL), and a clinical nurse specialist (ACNS-BC). Earlier in her career, Dr. Savoy was also certified as a critical care nurse (CCRN) and a certified neuroscience nurse (CNRN).
Outside of her professional career, Dr. Savoy remains informed of the changes and advancements in her industry through related organizations. She is a past research committee member of the American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Nurses, past treasurer of the Michigan Association for Healthcare Quality and past treasurer of the NEMC chapter of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. Dr. Savoy also served as a treasurer of the Illinois chapter of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses (AANN), as treasurer and nursing education chair for the SE MI chapter of the AANN, nominating committee chair of Theta Chi chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) nursing honor society and board of directors member of Gamma Phi chapter of STTI.
Dr. Savoy has contributed a number of articles to professional journals. Proud moments of Dr. Savoy's career were speaking at national conferences on the research she conducted with Dr. Penn, most particularly the novel therapy of intrathecal baclofen infusion for the management of spasticity which was later approved by the FDA. Dr. Savoy is also proud of presentations and publications based on her dissertation research into depressive symptoms of women at risk of cardiovascular disease. In light of her many contributions to the field, Dr. Savoy has been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Nursing, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders of America.
