Dr. Kittrie describes himself as "European born, British educated and American by choice". He spent his early childhood in Europe and his teens in the Middle East. Having served, as an under-age volunteer, in a British Temporary Additional Constabulary unit attached to the British Middle East Command, he later spent two years attending classes at Cairo's Al Azhar University and at Jerusalem's Hebrew University studying regional economics, ancient history, politics and comparative religions. That initial geographic cycle was repeated several decades later with Kittrie's return to England's London School of Economics as a Visiting Professor. Kittrie attributes his continuing multi-disciplinary, multi-national, multi-cultural, multi-racial and multi-religious interests and friendships to the rich geographic, cultural and ethnic diversity of his formative years.
Young Kittrie's life long search for new horizons and his passionate interest in legal values, such as "equality" and "justice", and in the institutions for their enforcement, soon brought him to the United States and to The University of Kansas School of Law.
Dr. Kittrie earned two degrees (LL.B. and M.A.) from the University of Kansas and several years later an equal number of advanced law degrees (LL.M. and S.J.D.) from the Georgetown University School of Law in Washington, D.C. Having been admitted to legal practice in Kansas, in the District of Columbia, and The Supreme Court of the United States, he had from time-to-time implemented these privileges, including taking an active part as amicus curiae, in two winning constitutional law cases before the United States' highest court.
Having received a prestigious two-year graduate Raymond Administrative Law Fellowship at the University of Chicago School of Law, Kittrie remained in the "windy City" for two more years, welcoming the opportunity to serve as one of the first Research Directors in the then newly established American Bar Foundation (the research arm of the American Bar Association).
Some two years later, Nicholas Kittrie landed in Washington, D.C., in pursuit of his next ideal objective -- to observe and take part, first-hand, in the central institutions, proceedings and operations accountable for shaping the country's destiny and guarding its system of "justice". His appointment, through the sponsorship of Senator Alexander Wiley (Wis. R) to serve as Special Counsel to the United States Senate Judiciary Committee's Antitrust and Monopoly Subcommittee (Chaired by Senator Estes Kefauver, Tenn. D), was a key and fortunate step in Kittrie's evolving career.
Kittrie's exceptionally effective performance at the ongoing U.S. Senate Antitrust and Monopoly Subcommittee investigations and public hearings, addressing originally the increasing complaints about the escalating consumer costs in the insurance and pharmaceutical industries, brought Kittrie much media attention, professional praise, and work-place respect. It was Kittrie's international, economic and comparative law education and experience, as well as, his lingual skills, that served him immensely in the challenging, submitted U.S. companies' reports committee, as well as, their live testimony, directing the blaming for the USA insurance industry high prices to Lloyds of London, and the responsibility for the American pharmaceutical pricing to Italian and Swiss competitors. Throughout the nearly three years of Kittrie's Senate's Subcommittees' tenure, he had sought to and successfully demonstrated the international and comparative law's growing utility.
At the American University's Washington College of Law, Kittrie's academic rank continued rising speedily from full Professor to Professor and Mooers Scholar, then finally to Distinguished University and Law Professor, the first such recognition and honor granted a WCL professor, during its over 100-year history. His election and appointment as Dean of the Law School came next as an acknowledgement of his creative contributions to the institution. Continually, Dr. Kittrie had also been teaching a wide array of criminal, international and comparative law courses and seminars. Additionally, he founded the LAWCOR Program (Lawyers in Corrections) being the first U.S. law school student clinic dedicated to counseling prison inmate populations, both during their confinement and as a pre-release planning aid. Kittrie also developed three overseas law school summer programs which operated successfully in London, Warsaw, Moscow and Jerusalem.
In addition to his law school duties, and significantly reflective of the University's appreciation for Kittrie's academic and creative achievements, he was asked by the University's President to play a major role in the planning and development of the University's newly created multi-disciplinary Criminal Justice Department to be located in the School of Government.
To this day, Dr. Kittrie, Distinguished University and Law Professor, Emeritus, continues to provide, to the University community and outside of it, his expertise in both comparative domestic and international law from his WCL Emeritus office and through an independent, not-for-profit organization, The Eleanor Roosevelt Institute for Justice, Peace and Global Security, which he founded and continues to Chair.
Kittrie has and continues participating in research studies and conferences in places as diverse as Israel, Jordan, Korea, Kenya, the United Kingdom, Italy, Central America, Eastern Europe, Japan, Germany, Japan and China. In 2016, the Faculty Lounge at the American University Washington College of Law Tenley Campus was dedicated and named in his honor – "The Nicholas N. Kittrie Faculty Lounge". Inducted into the Founder's Circle of the Georgetown University Law Center, he has also been recognized as an Outstanding Career Alumni by the University of Kansas School of Law. The Kennedy Inn of the Phi Delta Phi Barristers Law Fraternity, similarly, honored Kittrie with the Sam Green Award for special and diverse contributions to students and practitioners of Law.
Dr. Kittrie is an author or editor of more than a dozen volumes, widely reviewed and highly praised in the areas of law, psychology, medicine, economics and other allied disciplines. Two of his books have been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Another major volume on "The Future of Peace in the 21st Century" (Co-Edited by H.E. Rodrigo Carazo, former President of Costa Rica, Dr. Nicholas N. Kittrie, KStJ, and H.E. James R. Macham, Founding President of Republic of Seychelles, with a Forward by H.E. Oscar Arias, former President of Costa Rica, and an article by Dr. Jehan Sadat, former First Lady of Egypt) had been prepared in connection with the Nobel Peace Prize Committee's celebration of the Prize's 100th year anniversary. One of his edited volumes, "The Tree of Liberty: A Documentary History of Rebellion and Political Crime in America" (Co-edited by Nicholas N. Kittrie and Eldon Wedlock, Jr.) in 1986 earned the critical recognition of being "The Best Book in Law" from the Association of American Publishers. Other books include "The Right to be Different: Deviance and Enforced Therapy" 1971; "Law, Medicine and Public Policy" 1975; "Sanctions, Sentencing and Corrections" 1981; "The War Against Authority: The Crisis of Legitimacy and the New Social Contract" 1995; and "Rebels With a Cause: The Minds and Morality of Political Offenders" 1999.
Most recently, in recognition of his contributions to International Criminal Law, Genocide and War Crimes literature, Dr. Kittrie was invited by the Polish Deputy Prime Minister, to participate as a keynote speaker at the 75th Year Memorial Ceremony held in Sobibor, honoring the most successful World War II prisoners' rebellion and escape of some 600 inmates.
Dr. Kittrie continues to engage in extensive travel, both domestic and international, attending and speaking at relevant conferences and meetings, as well as visiting colleagues. Kittrie is an avid patron of the arts, theatre, culture, and music worldwide, as well as a collector of political, historical and cultural books, fine art and antiques.
Currently, Dr. Kittrie continues to serve as Senior Editor of the International Journal on World Peace, as Board Chair of the reconstructed 70-year old Paragon House Book Publishing company, as Chair of the Eleanor Roosevelt Institute for Justice, Peace and Global Security, and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Bridgeport.
