With major areas of research including clinical trials, prognostics models, longitudinal analysis, multivariate analysis and robustness, Dr. D'Agostino boasts extensive expertise in developing cardiovascular risk prediction models, which have been used in treatment guidelines sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the American Heart Association, as well as web-based models for consumer use. His work has also been utilized in the development of an instrument for predicting acute ischemic health disease as well as the development of a stroke health risk appraisal function and coronary heart disease risk assessment function. A co-principal investigator on the Framingham Heart Study between 1993 and 2015, Dr. D'Agostino has been affiliated with the Harvard Clinical Research Institute, a non-profit organization specializing in device and drug clinical trials. He has also provided his expertise as a special government employee to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has participated on numerous advisory committees, including as the chairman of the nonprescription drugs advisory committee. The FDA notably honored Dr. D'Agostino for his dedication with a Special Citation in 1981 and 1995.
Writing extensively in his field, Dr. D'Agostino has contributed his research to over 700 articles to scholarly journals. He has further worked as a book reviewer, a consultant, the editor and an editorial board member for several well-known professional journals. Likewise, Dr. D'Agostino was the co-editor of the 2007 book "Encyclopedia of Clinical Trials" and the co-author of 10 other books, including "Factor Analysis, An Applied Approach" in 1983, "Introductory Applied Biostatistics" in 2004 and "Biosimilar Clinical Development" in 2017.
An alumnus of Boston University, Dr. D'Agostino has earned both a bachelor's and master's degree from the aforementioned school. Subsequently, he graduated from Harvard University with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1968. An elected fellow of the American Statistical Association, he served as the vice president and the president of the organization's Boston chapter. A fellow of the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Council of the American Heart Association, Dr. D'Agostino is a member of several other industry related organizations, including the American Society for Quality Control, and the Biometrics Society.
A pre-doctoral fellow with the NIH between 1962 and 1968, Dr. D'Agostino was designated as an American Statistical Association fellow in 1990 and an American Heart Association fellow in 1991. The recipient of several accolades, he was presented with an Award for Distinguished Service and Contributions by the American Public Health Association in 2014, a Reynold Lecture Award in 2006, and the Metcalf Cup and Prize for Excellence in Teaching at Boston University in 1985.
