Supported by 65 years of practical experience, Mr. Nilles is a distinguished engineer and business executive who most recently served as the president of JALA International Inc. in Los Angeles. He formed the company in partnership with his wife, Laila, in 1983 and has since semi-retired from the role. In 1972 he became Director of Interdisciplinary Program Development and, later, director of the Information Technology Program at the University of Southern California. He also served as a graphic artist for Protone Records. Likewise he excelled in myriad roles with The Aerospace Corporation between 1961 and 1972, including as director of Special Projects and as Associate Group Director. Punctuating these positions, Mr. Nilles served as a senior systems engineer for TRW Inc. from 1967 to 1969.
At the inception of his career in 1954, Mr. Nilles served in the United States Air Force and the Air Force Reserve where he rose to the rank of Captain by 1964. During this period, he acted as a senior engineer for the Raytheon Company in Santa Barbara, California, and as a section head for the Ramo-Woolridge Corp., in Los Angeles. Prior to being employed by The Aerospace Corporation, Mr. Nilles served as a project engineer for the Space Technology Laboratories in Los Angeles in 1960. Alongside his primary career responsibilities, he was also a co-director of the Concerts West Performing Arts Association in Santa Monica, California; coordinator of the European Community Telework forum in Madrid, Spain; and the director and president of the International Telework Advisory Council. Since 1990, Mr. Nilles has continued to serve as the chair of the Telecommuting Research Institute Inc.
To prepare for his career, Mr. Nilles pursued formal education at Lawrence University in Wisconsin, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in physics, magna cum laude, in 1954. He subsequently attended the University of California Los Angeles, receiving a Master of Science in engineering in 1964. A longtime member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Mr. Nilles has also maintained affiliation with the IEEE Computer Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for Computing Machinery and the World Future Society, among others.
Likewise, Mr. Nilles is a prolific author, having sat on the editorial board of Revista Portuguesa de Gestao since 2000. First authoring "The Telecommunications-Transportation Tradeoff" in 1976, he subsequently authored such books as "Exploring the World of the Personal Computer" in 1982, "Micros and Modems: Telecommunicating with Personal Computers" in 1983, "Making Telecommuting Happen: A Guide for Telemanagers and Telecommuters" in 1994 and "Managing Telework: Strategies for Managing the Virtual Workforce" in 1998. His books have subsequently been released in several more editions in a variety of languages.
As a testament to his success, Mr. Nilles was the recipient of the Rod Rose Award from the Society of Research Administrators International in 1976 and the Environmental Pride Award from Los Angeles Magazine in 1993. Later in his career, he earned the Environmental Achievement Award from Renew American and a Commendation from the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors. In 1998, Mr. Nilles was inducted into the Telework Hall of Fame.
