After working in the field of chemistry for many years, Dr. Tanner retired from his role as assistant to the Director of the Office of Special Nutritionists at the United States Food and Drug Administration, where he had also worked as chief of the nutrient surveillance branch and supervisory research chemist. Earlier in his career, he gained valuable expertise through Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh as a chemistry lecturer in a career filled with highlights, Dr. Tanner is especially proud of working for the FDA, where he was responsible for coordinating with infant formula companies to develop analytical methodology for infant formula regulatory issues in 1980 and contributing to the Nutrition and Food Labeling Regulation of 1990 for which he received the HHS Secretaries Award. He is a co-founder of the Methods and Applications of Radioanalytical Chemistry (MARC) Conferences.
Dr. Tanner holds a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Eastern Kentucky University and a Doctor of Philosophy in radiochemistry from the University of Kentucky. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society, and a Fellow of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists International and Sigma Xi. Throughout his career, he contributed nearly 100 articles in professional journals and was featured in the third edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. As an expert in radioanalytical chemistry, Dr. Tanner contributed to several committees, programs and projects of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Dr. Tanner enjoys his retirement by opening an antique shop, playing music and traveling with his wife, Dr. Bonnie O. Tanner.
