With more than 50 years of professional experience to his credit, Dr. Schopf has been a professor with the University of California Los Angeles since 1973, having excelled as an associate professor from 1970 to 1973 and an assistant professor from 1968 to 1970. In addition to his primary roles, he has held a number of other positions with the aforementioned school, including the founder and the director of the Center of the Study of Evolution and the Origin of Life since 1985, the dean of the honors division of the College of Letters and Science from 1983 to 1985, a member of the Institute of Evolutionary and Environmental Biology from 1970 to 1976, and a member of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics since 1973 and a member of the Molecular Biology Institute since 1991. He additionally served as a J.A. Bownocker Lecturer with the Ohio State University and a distinguished lecturer with the Buffalo Science Museum in 1982. A Sigma Xi distinguished lecturer with the University of Cincinnati in 1980, Dr. Schopf began his career as a research chemist with Ames Research Center and NASA in 1967 and a member of the lunar sample preliminary examination team at the Manned Spacecraft Center from 1968 to 1972.
Dr. Schopf initially pursued an education with Oberlin College, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in geology, with high honors, in 1963. He subsequently enrolled at Harvard University, completing a Master of Arts in biology in 1965. Dr. Schopf concluded his studies at Harvard University in 1968, where from 1965 to 1968 he was a member of the Harvard Society of Fellows, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in biology. In 2011 he was recipient of an honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. Throughout his career he has served as a M.W. Haas Lecturer at the University of Kansas, a Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer at the University of Cincinnati, a H.P. Mangelsdorf Lecturer at the University of North Carolina, an A.L. Clark Lecturer at the University of Texas and a William Smith Lecturer at the Geological Society of London.

A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Academy of Microbiology, the Geological Society of America, the Paleontological Society, the American Association of the Advancement of Science and the International Society for the Study of the Origin of Life. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Foreign Member of the Linnaean Society of London. He has also been affiliated with the Botanical Society of America, the Geochemical Society, and the Society for the Study of Evolution. Likewise, Dr. Schopf has maintained his involvement with the Psychological Society of America, the American Association of University Professors, the American Institute of Biological Sciences, the International Organization of Paleobotany and the International Psychological Society.
