Ms. Hopkins, a well-established music teacher at Smithfield Schools in Rhode Island, celebrates a career in education that spans nearly 60 years. Originally teaching in the Naugatuck Schools in Connecticut beginning in 1961 and later in the Attleboro Schools in Massachusetts beginning in 1962, she eventually made her way to Rhode Island in 1982, where she has since remained. During the last 20 years of her career, Ms. Hopkins had the opportunity to participate in several Broadway shows with her students, which was quite an honor. She was also able to show off her own skills as a substitute French horn player with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She was offered to sit in a substitute for positions in the French horn section. She has played French horn since fourth grade and joined many orchestras on a part-time basis.
Ms. Hopkins has been active with several professional organizations, such as the American Choral Directors Conference and the Music Educators National Conference. Locally, she has been affiliated as a parent council for the Boy Scouts of America in Smithfield, Rhode Island, since 1992, an advocate for the Special Olympics at the Trudeau Center since 1995 and an advocate for the American Red Cross in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, since 1997.
Playing various instruments throughout middle and high school, Ms. Hopkins became inspired by her former high school music director, Donald Gay, to become a music educator. Occasionally allowing her to direct the school band and chorus as a student, it fueled her passion for the field. Going on to college, she attended the New England Conservatory, where she acquired a Bachelor of Music in education in 1961.
In 2008, Ms. Hopkins was awarded with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the State of Rhode Island. A celebrated Marquis listee, she has also since been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who in the World.
