With more than 35 years of experience in civil engineering to his credit, Mr. Gruninger has become an authority in his industry. He began his career as an engineer at New York Telephone (now known as Verizon New York, Inc.) from 1960 to 1966, an engineer at Malcolm Pirnie, Inc., from 1966 to 1968, and a project manager at Malcolm Pirnie from 1968 to 1979. He subsequently served as the vice president of C.C. Johnson & Malhotra Inc. from 1979 to 1990, the vice president of Lewis & Zimmerman Associates, Inc., from 1990 to 1991, and manager of special projects for Gannett Fleming Engineers from 1992 to 1997. From 1998 to 2000, he did freelance consulting on several major wastewater treatment projects.
Prior to becoming an esteemed civil engineer, Mr. Gruninger pursued higher education with a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering and a Master of Science in civil engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1960 and 1968, respectively. He served as the editorial director of Industrial Water Engineering from 1980 to 1985.
Apart from his career, Mr. Gruninger volunteers as a member of Gideon's International. Outside of his professional responsibilities, he remains informed of the changes and advancements in his industry through relevant organizations. He is a past member of the Water Environmental Federation, the American Water Works Association and the American Society of Civil Engineers. Mr. Gruninger has served as the membership committee chair of the Maryland and District of Columbia section of the AAEE and served as the president of the Bergen County Civil Engineers from 1975 to 1976.
The most satisfying moments of Mr. Gruninger's career include working for Malcolm Pirnie, Inc. on the planning and design of environmental facility projects for numerous government and industrial clients in various states in the eastern United States. He spent three months in Iran in 1977 developing facility designs for wastewater management for the city of Shiraz. Mr. Gruninger was featured in the second edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering in 1993.
