Dr. Keith began her distinguished career in education by pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in English and history from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, graduating in 1971. Upon graduation, she began her 29-year career in public schools as an English teacher at Crisp County High School, in Cordele, Georgia, where she served from 1971 to 1977. Transitioning her focus to education for gifted students, Dr. Keith completed a professional certificate in gifted education from Valdosta State University in Georgia before going on to serve as a teacher for the gifted at the Tift County Junior High School and the Dooly County School System in Vienna, Georgia, between 1977 and 1982.
Returning to Valdosta State University in 1982, Dr. Keith earned a Master of Education in counseling. She went on to serve as a school counselor for middle and high school students from 1982 to 1998, including work with nontraditional students at the Dougherty County Alternative School in Albany from 1991 to 1998. Dr. Keith completed further postgraduate coursework at Valdosta State University in 1987, and concluded her education in 2000, attaining a Doctor of Education in child and youth studies. She ultimately retired from her work in public schools in that same year.
Dr. Keith continues to share her expertise while serving on the Dougherty County Commission on Children and Youth and at the Southwest Georgia Area Health Education Center, where she has served since 1996. Presented with a number of awards throughout her career, she has been recognized as Volunteer of the Year by the Dougherty County Council on Child Abuse in 1993 and as the Student Assistance Program Counselor of Year for State of Georgia in 1994. Additionally, she had the honor of presenting at the National Dropout Prevention Conference in 1997. Dr. Keith resides in Albany, where she shares her passions for reading and classical music with her husband, Carlos Lamar Keith Sr.
