Retired since 1995, Mr. Fester is an accomplished aerospace engineer and consultant with more than 40 years of experience in the field. Accepting a position as an engineer with Phillips Petroleum Company in Borger, Texas, after college, he subsequently worked in the same capacity at the University of Wisconsin Solar Laboratory and G.O.G. Lof Consultant Engineers in Denver. Between 1961 and 1993, he found success as an engineering manager with the Martin Marietta Corporation, a company that was a leader in chemicals, aerospace and electronics and merged with Lockheed Corporation to form Lockheed Martin in 1993. Mr. Fester concluded his career as the president of Denver Space Systems.
Outside of his full-time professional commitments, Mr. Fester provides member assessments for NASA, the National Academy of Sciences and the U.S. Congress Office of Technology Assessment. He was also active as a member and the chairman of the Air Force Plans Assessment in Los Angeles and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mr. Fester has further maintained his involvement with several symposiums.
Mr. Fester extensively studied the behavior of liquids in low gravity including earth-storable and cryogenic propellants. He also contributed an assessment of propulsion systems to Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, an Israeli defense technology company. Furthermore, Mr. Fester was responsible for the design of propellant tanks for the Intelsat 5 satellite and RCS tanks for the space shuttle, the Titan I and Titan II ICBM's, the Titan III and IV launch vehicles and the Viking MARS orbiter and lander.
As a result of his research, Mr. Fester has become a prolific author. He has written over 150 articles for various journals, including the Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, which is published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Offering his research to multiple NASA program reports and Martin program reports as well, he completed service in the United States Army between 1953 and 1955. Mr. Fester is a graduate of the University of Denver, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering in 1953 and a Master of Science in chemical engineering in 1961.
An elected fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Mr. Fester excelled with the aforementioned organization as the vice president and on the board of directors. He is also a member of the International Astronautical Academy, the Air Force Association and the National Space Society, among others. Likewise, Mr. Fester is a former vice president of the International Astronautical Federation.
In 2003, Mr. Fester was presented with a West High School Outstanding Alumni Award. He also received four Certificate of Recognition Awards from NASA between 1969 and 1993 as well as a Shuttle Flag Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1984. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Fester has been featured in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
