Prior to this engagement, he served as a professor, the head of urology, and later, the chair of the department of urology, for the aforementioned institution from 1976 to 2006. During this time, he also contributed as the vice chair for the department of surgery for the University of California San Diego between 1985 and 1997. Earlier in his career, Dr. Schmidt served as a faculty member with the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa from 1969 to 1976.
Other professional endeavors to Dr. Schmidt's credit include working as a consultant for the United States Department of the Navy in San Diego since 1976. Additionally, he was the associate director of clinical research at the Moores Cancer Center with UC San Diego Health from 1997 to 1998. He also spent many years as an attending urologist for the Veteran's Affairs Department in San Diego between 1976 and 2014. An expert urologist, Dr. Schmidt's related written work, "Gynecological and Obstetric Urology," was first published in 1978 and has had further editions released in 1982 and 1993.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Schmidt attended the University of Illinois, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in medicine in 1959 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1961. Subsequently, he worked as a rotating intern at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, later completing a residency in surgery between 1961 and 1963. Furthermore, he completed another residency in urology at the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore from 1963 to 1967. Moreover, Dr. Schmidt became a diplomate of the American Board of Urology in 1971.
A veteran of the United States Air Force, Dr. Schmidt achieved the rank of a captain between 1967 and 1969. Throughout his career, he was proud to have studied under his role models physicians, Dr. William Wallace Scott, Dr. Ruben Flocks and Dr. David Culp. An exceptional Marquis listee, he has been selected for inclusion in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
