A private practice attorney in the District of Columbia for more than 50 years, Mr. Ward originally began his professional journey in 1967 in Washington. He has since held the post of a partner at several firms, most recently including Freideman, Irelan, Ward and Lamberton. Additionally, he has served of counsel at Hewes, Morella, Gelband and Lamberton, and a principal of the Law Office of Nicholas D. Ward. Mr. Ward's long and distinguished career also included several academic appointments. He taught the paralegal program at the University of Maryland and Georgetown University, was an adjunct professor at Catholic University School of Law and a faculty member at the Museum Management Institute and the Seminar for Historical Administration.
Mr. Ward was active on several committees, including the advisory committee on Superior Court rules of probate and fiduciary procedure. He also lent his expertise as a rules consultant and Consultant Register of Wills consultant. Mr. Ward has contributed multiple articles to professional journals as an author and co-author, is the former state editor of The Probate Counsel and of the Wilkins' Drafting Will and Trust Documents, and was the editor of several editions of the legal form book "Will and Testamentary Trust Forms" between 1974 and the present.
An alumnus of Columbia College, Mr. Ward holds a bachelor's degree since 1963. He then acquired a Bachelor of Laws at Georgetown University in 1966. After graduating, he served several years as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve between 1966 and 1972. Mr. Ward has been admitted to practice law by the D.C. Bar, the U.S. Tax Court, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Mr. Ward maintains membership with The Lawyer's Club and the Ancient Heraldic and Chivalric Order of Albion. He is a former member of multiple other organizations, including the Bar Association of D.C., with which he served on the board of directors, as a treasurer and the president of the Bar Association Foundation the D.C. Estate Planning Council, for which he served on the board of directors, and the American Bar Association. He was chairman of the claim secretary of the D.C. Bar. Further, Mr. Ward was elected as a fellow of the American College Trust and Estate Counsel and the National Association of College and University Attorneys. Involved with several charitable and civic organizations throughout Washington, Mr. Ward was a steering committee member of the Friends of Music at the Smithsonian Institution for nearly 20 years, between 1986 and 2005. Moreover, he was an annual corporate member of the Children's Hospital of the District of Columbia, and a trustee of Benjamin Franklin University.
Named Jaycee of the Year for 1973, Mr. Ward later received a Marvin E. Preis Award by the Bar Association of the District of Columbia in 1980 and a Samuel Green Award by the Barrister Inn Phi Delta Phi in 1991. An AV rated attorney by Martindale-Hubbell, Mr. Ward has also been listed in Best Lawyers in America for 2000 and is a celebrated Marquis listee featured in approximately 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in Finance and Industry.
