Martin, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Martin celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Dan Martin is a widely experienced grant-maker, environmentalist, educator, non-profit manager and consultant to private foundations. His career includes work with medical schools, liberal arts colleges, nature conservation, population issues, climate change, sustainable economic development and public policy for higher education and foreign aid. Those engagements have taken him to more than 120 countries in most regions of the world. He has served on a many public and non-profit boards and worked in numerous American election campaigns. During the 2012 Presidential process, he was a member of the Executive Committee of the Energy and Environment Team for Obama and was Manager of that operation in Iowa.

He has been a staff member at four private foundations, starting with the Markle Foundation in New York, making grants for medical education in the US and Canada. Later, he was President of the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation, also in New York, awarding grants in environment and population. At the MacArthur Foundation in Chicago, he was the founding Director of two large programs: World Environment and Resources and Population and Reproductive Health. At the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation in San Francisco, he served as its initial Chief Research Officer and Senior Director, Environment.

Outside the foundation field, he was Assistant to the Chancellor and Assistant Professor of Political Science at Vanderbilt University, President of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest, President of the Cranbrook Educational Community, and Senior Managing Director of the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund, a global donor agency based in Washington, DC. His teaching experience also includes serving as Assistant Professor in Social Sciences at the Rush Medical School in Chicago and as a Visiting Professor of Zoology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Martin was also a member of the Committee for Research and Exploration of the National Geographic Society, President of the Consultative Group on Biological Diversity (a foundation affinity group), and Vice President of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, based in Switzerland.

In the public sector, Martin was a member of the US National Commission on the Financing of Post-Secondary Education, the Illinois Board of Regents, the Illinois Board of Higher Education, and the Board of Governors of the International Development Research Centre in Canada.

He is currently Chairman of the Phelps Stokes Fund, a trustee of Knox College, and a board member for Cuso International (the Canadian equivalent of the US Peace Corps), the Micronesia Conservation Trust, Wetlands International, based in the Netherlands, Amigos of Costa Rica, and the Environmental Film Festival in Washington.

A native of rural Iowa, Martin received the A.B. degree at Knox College, earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in international politics and political theory at Princeton University, and served as an Intelligence officer in the United States Army.
