Enlisting in the United States Air Force upon being graduated from Wood Memorial High School in Oakland City, IN, Dr. Williams served honorably completing his service following an 18-month tour of duty in Turkey. Returning to Indiana, he subsequently graduated from Oakland City College (now Oakland City University) with a Bachelor of Science degree, cum laude, in 1963 with a double major in Business and English. Under the guidance of his mentor, Dr. Olive Smith, he received a teaching assistantship to Indiana University where he obtained his Master's degree in business education in 1964, a field in which he structured his entire career. Upon receiving this degree, he taught at Arlington High School in Indianapolis, IN for one year. The opportunity presented itself for him to return to his alma mater, Oakland City University, where he served as a professor of business and directed dramatics for four years. Exploring other options, Dr. Williams served as an editor for Southwestern Publishing Company (publisher of business and economic textbooks) in Cincinnati, OH from 1969-1972 where he also taught adjunct classes at the University of Cincinnati. With an interest to return to academia, he pursued an advanced degree at Georgia State University ·n Atlanta. During this time period, he taught part-time at Atlanta Area Vocational School and DeKalb Community College as well as at Georgia State University. Additionally, he was employed by the Georgia State Department of Education to develop a model to be used to evaluate existing job placement program within the state of Georgia. This project formed the basis for his doctoral dissertation.
After earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Education with an emphasis on business communication from Georgia State University in 1974, Dr. Williams was hired by the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana, Lafayette) where he advanced through the ranks and retired as a Professor Emeritus in the College of Business Administration. Throughout his career, 1975-2002, he found success in teaching a variety of subject matter and serving as department head of the business administration department for a decade and as acting department head of the management department on several occasions. Following retirement, Dr. Williams served as an adjunct professor at the University between 2004 and 2005. In 1997, he was recognized as the Outstanding Teacher in the College of Business and in 1996 he received the Outstanding Teaching Award for the Southwest region of the Association for Business Communication.
Dr. Williams was an active researcher and publisher throughout his career including author of Study Guide to Accompany Business Communication Principles and Applications, John Wiley & Sons, 1988. As an active member of the Association for Business Communication, he appeared on both regional and national and international programs. In 1979, he co-hosted the Southeast regional meeting of ABC in Lafayette. In 1980, he was the associate chairperson for the 6th International and 45th National Convention of ABC in Washington, D.C. where he served as director of program. Dr. Williams edited Communication and Technology: Today and Tomorrow, a publication of the Association for Business Communication in 1994 and co-edited Information Systems and Business Communication in 1983 for ABC.
Through his career, Dr. Williams maintained affiliations with the American Association of University Professors, the Association of Business Communicators (Board of Directors 1986-1990, vice-president of the Southwest region and recipient of the Francis W. Weeks Merit Award 1984), and the Louisiana Association of Higher Education. He is a lifetime member of the Indiana University Alumni Association and the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association. Honor fraternities include Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Delta Pi Epsilon. Dr. Williams has been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who's in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in American Education, 'Who's Who in Media and Communication, Who's Who in Finance and Business, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
