He excelled as a foreign service officer with the United States Department of State from 1966 to 1987. During that time he notably served as chief of the U.S. Embassy liaison office in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and charge of the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi, UAE. After his diplomatic service, he was an international business consultant in Germany from 1988 to 1996 and in Wisconsin from 1997 to 2017. As an adjunct instructor, he taught at various institutions in Germany and Wisconsin from 1992 to 2017.
Prior to becoming an esteemed consultant, Dr. Gerlach obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin in 1961. Going on to continue his studies at Columbia University in New York City, he earned a Master of International Affairs in 1963 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1968. During his time at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Gerlach was deeply influenced by his close friend and fraternity brother, Mark Beach, who always challenged him to think in different ways.
Dr. Gerlach has contributed a number of articles to professional journals and was a co-editor for "Aspects of the Market Economy." Outside of his professional responsibilities, he remains informed of the changes and advancements in his field through relevant organizations. Additionally, Dr. Gerlach is a member of the Foreign Service Retirees Association of Florida and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of South Florida. He also serves as director of the Milwaukee Choristers Foundation.
In light of his many achievements in the field, Dr. Gerlach has received a number of awards and accolades throughout his career. Having received the Superior Honor Award from the United States Department of State in 1979 and 1987, he was earlier recognized as a Fulbright-Hays research fellow from 1965 to 1966. Dr. Gerlach has previously been featured in several editions of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
