Dr. Virmani is an agricultural scientist, researcher and international agricultural research and development consultant residing in Plano, Texas, since 2006. Formerly employed with the International Rice Research Institute in Manila, Philippines, for nearly three decades, he served as a rice biotechnology breeder and leader of the hybrid rice research and development program, deputy head of plant breeding, genetics and the biotechnology division, and principal scientist. Dr. Virmani also worked in various capacities at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Nigeria and at Punjab Agricultural University and the Madhya Pradesh Department of Agriculture in India.
In addition to his full-time career, Dr. Virmani has served as a consultant in his field. He has worked with such organizations as the International Rice Research Institute and the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome. Highly educated, Dr. Virmani received a Bachelor of Science in agriculture (1961) and a Master of Science in agricultural botany (1963) from Vikram University. He later attained a Doctor of Philosophy degree in plant breeding from Punjab Agricultural University (1969).
A sought-after professional in his area of expertise, Dr. Virmani is a pioneer in the development and dissemination of hybrid rice technology in tropical countries outside of China. As a result of his work, he has contributed more than 250 research papers to science journals and chapters to books. He is the author of "Reference Book on Hybrid Rice" and has been an editorial board member of the International Journal of Plant Breeding since 1987.
A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Virmani is also a lifetime member of the Crop Improvement Society of India. Additional memberships include the Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding, the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences in India, the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of the Philippines and the Crop Science Society of America. The Crop Science Society of America notably honored him with an International Service in Crop Science Award in 2002. Locally, Dr. Virmani has been affiliated with the Rotary Club of Frisco, where he was a Paul Harris fellow in 2015, and the Rotary Club of Los Baños in the Philippines, where he was a Paul Harris fellow in 2003.
The recipient of numerous recognitions for his work, Dr. Virmani more recently received a Padma Shri Award in 2008 and a Pravasi Bhartiya Samman Award from the President of India in 2005. He also received the Koshikikari International Rice Prize in Japan in 2005. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Asia, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
