In addition to advising clients regarding the implementation of value-based care, she is a leading expert on the creation of novel business models and structures to foster biotechnology companies' expansion. Backed by her expertise in data security and cyber-security issues, she also represents clients in matters that involve the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Office for Civil Eights and HIPAA. Ms. Gersh's clients range from pharmaceutical manufacturers and medical device companies to dental organizations, medical centers, and community hospitals.
Apart from her work with Ropes & Gray, Ms. Gersh served as a member on the board of the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education. Previously, she sat on the board of directors for the Coalition Women's Initiatives Law Firms from 2008 until 2009, affiliated as a member of the policy committee for DLA Piper from 2006 until 2009, and worked as a partner with DLA Piper between 2005 and 2009. Ms. Gersh initially became involved in the field as an associate and a partner for Rudnick & Wolfe, and later Piper Rudnick LLP from 1983 to 2004.
Before obtaining her inaugural position in the legal field, Ms. Gersh earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Northwestern University in 1980. Three years later, she obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence through the George Washington University School of Law. Subsequently, she was admitted to practice through the Illinois Bar Association and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. In order to remain aware of industry changes and network with others on a national level, she affiliates herself with the National Association of Professional Women, the Chicago Bar Association and the American Health Lawyers Association. Additionally, Ms. Gersh devotes her time and resources to her legal alma mater on the advisory board.
Throughout her career, Ms. Gersh has published articles extensively on issues in the health care industry, most recently the following Law 360 articles, "HHS Sets Out to Tackle Health Information Access and Exchanges" and "What to Know About CMS; New Bundled Payment Model." Her considerable expertise has also led to her being quoted in numerous publications, including "Mergers and Acquisitions, Private Equity in Healthcare Primed for Continued Robust Activity" and "HHS Shifts Spotlight to Value-Based Care with RFI Looking at How HIPAA Inhibits Coordination." More recently, she planned, in partnership with Bloomberg, a half-day symposium titled Value-Based Health Care: New Models for Success where she presented on strategic partnerships and the necessity of deploying technological capabilities within health systems as they transition to value-based care. Due to her achievements in the industry, in 2019, Ms. Gersh was named to The National Law Journal's list of Health Care Law Trailblazers, which recognizes "agents of change" in the legal industry who have made an impact on the health care sector through new strategies or innovation.
