VANCOUVER, WA, August 06, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Gary David Patterson, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Patterson celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Patterson, professor emeritus of chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, retired in 2018 after 34 years on campus. Prior to his tenure, he was a member of the AT&T Bell Laboratories technical staff in Murray Hill, New Jersey, for 12 years. Throughout his career, Dr. Patterson focused much of his research on polymer science, colloid science, chemistry and physics of liquids and complex fluids, as well as light scattering and the history and philosophy of chemistry.
Involved with the Chemical Heritage Foundation (now known as the Science History Institute) in Philadelphia for many years, Dr. Patterson has served on the Board of Directors since 2014 and is the Chair of its Heritage Council. He was the Charles C. Price Fellow in 2005. The organization notably focuses its efforts on the history of chemistry, chemical engineering and the life sciences. Dr. Patterson is also a past Chief Bibliophile of the Bolton Society (chemical bibliophiles), remains active as a fellow of the American Physical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry, and is a member of the Society for the History of Alchemy and Chemistry and the History of Science Society. He is the Historian of the Division of the History of Chemistry of the American Chemical Society and served as Chair during 2015-2016.
Renowned for his work in the application of light scattering spectroscopy to study the dynamics of polymer liquids near the glass transition, Dr. Patterson has also studied the structure and dynamics of polymers and nanoparticles in solution. Further, he has conducted extensive research in the history and philosophy of polymer science. As a result of his work, he has authored numerous chemistry-related articles in the Journal of Chemical Physics, the Journal of Polymer Science, Macromolecules and other similar journals. In 1980, Dr. Patterson co-authored the book "Methods of Experimental Physics: Volume 16, Polymers," and in 2007 published "Physical Chemistry of Macromolecules." He has since authored "A Prehistory of Polymer Science" (2012), "Polymer Science from 1935-1953: Consolidating the Paradigm" (2014), "Paul John Flory:A Life of Science and Friends" (2016), "Preceptors in Chemistry" (2018) and "Chemistry in 17th Century New England" (2020).
Highly educated, Dr. Patterson received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Harvey Mudd College in 1968 and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Stanford University in 1972. Dr. Patterson was honored with the first National Academy of Sciences William O. Baker Award for Initiatives in Research in 1981 "For his outstanding theoretical and experimental contributions to polymer science, particularly in the application of light scattering measurements in the understanding of polymer chain dynamics." A celebrated Marquis listee, he was featured in the fourth edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Patterson has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
