James Dale Bindenagel Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

With nearly 45 years of professional experience, Mr. Bindenagel has been a Henry Kissinger professor and the director of the Center for International Security and Governance at the University of Bonn since 2014.

Before obtaining his current roles, he was the vice president for community, government, and international affairs at DePaul University in Chicago from 2005 to 2013, President of the Japan America Society Chicago from 2013 to 2014, and VP of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs from 2003 to 2005. Mr. Bindenagel was previously the United States special negotiator for conflict diamonds from 2002 to 2003, United States Ambassador and Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues from 1999 to 2002, senior fellow for the New Transatlantic Agenda at the German Marshall Fund of the United States from 1997 to 1998, and was the charge d'Affaires (acting U.S. Ambassador) U.S. Embassy to the Federal Republic of Germany from 1996 to 1997. He was deputy chief of mission at the Embassy of the United States of America in Germany from 1994 to 1996.

From 1992 to 1994 Mr. Bindenagel was the director of the Office of Central European Affairs at the United States Department of State. He previously served as the director of government-business relations at Rockwell International from 1991 to 1992, and as the deputy chief of mission at the United States Embassy to the German Democratic Republic from 1989 to 1990. Earlier in his career at the United States Department of State from 1975 to 1989, Mr. Bindenagel was the acting director of Canadian affairs, Senior Watch Officer at the Operations Center, German Desk Officer, as well as Embassy Political Officer in Germany, Consul in Bremen, and assistant commercial attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Korea.

Mr. Bindenagel began his career after graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1971. He then joined the United States Army, serving to the rank of captain. Continuing his studies with the University of Illinois, he earned a Master of Public Administration in 1977. He was also an APSA Fellow for Congressman Lee H. Hamilton from 1987 to 1988.

Mr. Bindenagel is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the American Council on Germany, the Order of St John, the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), the American Political Science Association, and Pi Sigma Alpha. He serves on boards of the German-American Chamber of Commerce, the Defiant Requiem Foundation, the Arthur F. Burns Fellowship, the Frauenkirche Dresden Foundation, the AJC Berlin Ramer Institute, the Holocaust Fund of North Macedonia, and the Global Philanthropy Partnership.

Throughout his career, Mr. Bindenagel has been recognized for his contributions: to the establishment of the Congressional Study Group on Germany in 1987, to peaceful unification of Germany in 1989 and 1990, for the negotiation of the Washington Principles on Nazi-confiscated Art in 1998, to the creation of the Remembrance, Responsibility and Future Foundation in 2000, for the Kimberly Process agreement to ban conflict diamonds in 2003, for initiation of America's Urban Campus organization in Chicago in 2011, for the founding of the Henry Kissinger Chair at Bonn University in 2014 and the International Security Forum Bonn.

He received the Commander's Cross from the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Presidential Meritorious Service Award, the Distinguished Honors Award, and the Vice Presidential National Performance Award. In light of all his accomplishments, Mr. Bindenagel was featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
