Dr. Gentilcore celebrates more than four decades in education in the New York public school system. Retiring in 1996 but continuing to do interim principalships until 2011, she devoted more than 35 of those years to the Syosset School in Syosset, New York. Hired as a second-grade teacher in 1954, she additionally worked for the aforementioned academic institute as a reading teacher, the head teacher and as principal on two occasions. Dr. Gentilcore also excelled at the Peekskill School and Sea Cliff School in New York in 1952.
A member of the board of directors of the Anchor Project 2009 and the Saint Edwards Missioners Group since 2012, Dr. Gentilcore was also the chair of the Rotary Leadership Institute in 2011. An advocate for numerous causes throughout the world, she has served as coordinator of Rotary World Health and Hunger from 2006 to 2008. She was also affiliated with the Gift of Life medical mission in Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong, China and Taiwan, as well as the Medical Mission to Russia and the Medical Mission to India, where she immunized children against polio, and the Medical Mission to Honduras. In 1998, Dr. Gentilcore was notably involved with the Operations MITCH Project in Honduras after Hurricane Mitch left the people of Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua without food, shelter and other necessities.
A graduate of State University of New York, Dr. Gentilcore earned a Bachelor of Science in education. Subsequently, she continued her academic efforts at Hofstra University, where she obtained a Master of Science in education. Dr. Gentilcore concluded her studies with a Professional Diploma and a Doctor of Education, also at Hofstra University.
Dr. Gentilcore authored "Developmental Learning" for 1, 4, 5 and 6 year olds in 1979. She is a member and the past president of Syosset Principals, a member of Professional and Business Women and a member of Friendship Ex-Change in Taiwan. She is also a member and past club president within Rotary and the Syosset Woodbury Rotary Club, where she excelled in numerous roles, including as district governor of district 7250 Rotary from 1998 to 1999, the organization's zone 32 conference chair, the international avoidable blindness taskforce coordinator and the district 7250 centennial committee district chairman. Dr. Gentilcore accepted a Paul Harris fellowship from Rotary International in 1995. In 2003 she was recognized as a New York State Senate woman of distinction.
The recipient of numerous awards for her volunteer efforts, Dr. Gentilcore has been presented with a Rotary International Outstanding Service Award, an International Achievement Award, an International Presidential Global Award, a Service Above Self Award and an Abe Gordon V.P. Outstanding Service Award. She was also honored with a Gift of Life, Inc. Angel Award in 2019 for her dedication to bringing in children for heart surgery from all over the world and going on five medical missions to select and examine children. She sponsored a boy from Kosovo last year in memory of her late husband Jim of 65 years. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Gentilcore has been highlighted in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
