Since her retirement in 1997, Dr. Dykstra Lynch has held the title of professor emerita at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Prior to this appointment, she was an active figure at the university since accepting the position of a head cataloguer for the campus library in 1970. Subsequently, Dr. Dykstra Lynch worked her way to the roles of an assistant professor and an associate professor for the School of Information Management at Dalhousie University between 1974 and 1986. She would later found success with the institution as a professor from 1986 to 1997. She was director of the school from 1986 to 1995.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Dykstra Lynch enrolled at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1960. Ten years later, she obtained a Master of Library Service from Dalhousie University. She concluded her academic pursuits with a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Sheffield in Sheffield, England, in 1986.
Throughout her career, Dr. Dykstra Lynch has been involved with other career-related endeavors. She was appointed to the National Information Highway Advisory Council of Canada, serving from 1994 to 1997, and as a research officer for the University of Sheffield from 1996 to 1997. Other appointments to her credit include serving as a consultant in the field including in Paris ad in Florence, Italy, and as senior audiovisual librarian for the National Film Board of Canada in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, between 1982 and 1983. A past member of the editorial board for the professional journal, "Library and Information Science Research," Dr. Dykstra Lynch also contributed as series editor for the School of Library and Information Studies Occasional Papers at Dalhousie University and a member of the editorial board for "Cataloging and Classification Quarterly
Recognized as an expert in the field, Dr. Dykstra Lynch is author of the books "Precis: A Primer," and "Access to Film Information." For her achievements, she has been presented with numerous grants from the Dalhousie University and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. Likewise, Dr. Dykstra Lynch has been selected inclusion in several editions of Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who of American Women. She is also listed in Who's Who in Canada.
