Dr. Birchak began his career at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1961. He later attended Rice University in Houston, Texas, completing a Master of Arts in physics in 1964 and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1966. In 1971, Dr. Birchak earned a Master of Business Administration from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
From 1966 to 1971, Dr. Birchak was an associate senior research physicist at GM Research in Warren, Michigan. In 1971, he became a senior research physicist at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, where he would serve through 1976. From 1976 to 1979, Dr. Birchak was a research specialist for Babcock & Wilcox in Lynchburg, Virginia, before joining NL Industries in Houston as a scientist in 1979, where he advanced to manager before leaving in 1985. From 1986 to 1991, he served as a member of the technical staff at Reliability, Inc., of Houston, before joining Halliburton Energy Services as a principal research physicist from 1991 to 2004. Dr. Birchak became president and owner of Birchak Consulting in 1986, where he remains today.
Civically involved as well, Dr. Birchak was involved in a plan to develop demography computer programs to bring clean industries to San Antonio, Texas, from 1971 to 1976. Likewise, he was active in the Lynchburg Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school classes. Upon relocating to Houston, the pastor at Spring Woods United Methodist Church selected Dr. Birchak to be the adult coordinator for Sunday school classes. Likewise, he is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the American Physical Society, and has presented on the speed of computer-printed circuit boards at the prestigious IEEE Cherry Hill Conference. He is a contributor of numerous articles published in professional journals, and holds patents on processes widely used in the petroleum industry.
